Starting a Poetry Magazine

#BDturns10 Our popular magazine was founded in Newcastle, England in 2012 with financial support from New Writing North and Arts Council England. Each poet in our first issue received a Northern Writers’ Award in 2010 or 2011. Poet and mentor Clare Pollard helped to create an anthology of work and Butcher’s Dog began.

Each of the poets featured in this publication received Northern Writers’ Awards in 2010 or 2011. In Autumn 2011, the group met under the tutorship of the poet Clare Pollard. Butcher’s Dog arose out of conversations in these meetings. This issue of the magazine features those original seven poets; their poems were selected by the group as a whole.

The first issue features poems by just the founders: Luke Allan, Jake Campbell, Sophie F Baker, Wendy Heath, Amy Mackelden, Andrew Sclater and Degna Stone. The team have since disbanded, moving onto new things. Degna Stone was Managing Editor from 2012-2018. Sophie F Baker continues to typeset each issue.

In keeping with tradition, our current Managing Editor, the poet Jo Clement, secured a Northern Writers' Award in 2012. Since 2018, she has shaken up each submission call by working with the finest emerging poets and editors. This keeps our content fresh and our reader's tongues (and tails) wagging. #DogDecade
